About 100 years into watch-making by some of the world most famous brands, such as TAG Heuer 1860, A.Lange& Sohne 1845, DOXA 1889, Cerutti 1881, Omega 1848, IWC 1868, Tissot 1853, Patek Philippe 1839, Oris 1904 (55 years) and Rolex in early 20th Century, in their factories in Switzerland; Syarikat Jam Great Wall (Great Wall Watch Company) had started her humble operation in retailing in 1959 in Malaysia. The parent company of today’s City Time (M) Sdn. Bhd.

From a ‘L’ shape counter, sharing a frontage corner of a kopitiam (a typical local café) in Batu Road then, now called Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman or ‘Chow Kit Road’ started her first retailing business in June 1959, to today 2010, having our own shop lot in Pertama Shopping Complex, occupying 800 square feet, a technical service center, carrying more than 15 international renowned brands and a sizable pool of regular customers and corporate clients base.

51 years are not just a mere figure, but a cumulated and much refined expertise and experience in customer service, products and market knowledge, networking via public and private relations interchanging in between public customers, private corporations, fellow tradesmen, suppliers and government agencies. These are all keys to successful retailing in today ever fast changing and sharp discerning customers from national and international markets alike.

We have achieved all these not without the support, understanding and blessing from all our valued customers, clients and suppliers.

Travelling back in time for the last 51 years; we have a few important milestones to share with you.

In 1959 June, the operation of Syarikat Jam Great Wall, Great Wall Watch Company came into existing. A small capital only enable her to occupied a counter in the shop front of a coffee shop in then Batu Road or Chow Kit Road of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

In 1973, we opened our second branch in Campbell Shopping Complex, at the now Jalan Dang Wangi. We carried a few major famous brands then like Tissot, Longines, Sandoz, Titoni, Pagol, Durffee Paris.

To gain from the fast growing businesses, we opened our third branch in 1976, in Pertama Shopping Complex, the current location, across the road. This shopping complex was then one of the very popular shopping complexes. Famous world star singer Miss Teresa Teng was first here in Malaysia, staging her concert in the night club at this Pertama Shopping complex. We offered many famous brands then, like, Leonard, Omega, Cartier, Christian Bernard, Raymond Weil, Michel Herbelin, also the major brand ROLEX.

In 1979, for better business strategy, we converted the second branch to become City Time (M) Sdn. Bhd and we had successfully acquired the second authorized retailership of ROLEX and Tudor.

The Managing Director of The Rolex Center of Singapore and Malaysia, Mr. JEREMY C.G. RAMSEY was our honorable guest to officiate the grand opening on March 25th 1979. In his happiness and satisfaction with our efforts, he said “CITY TIME IS ROLEX TIME”! As a result, many newspaper articles and advertisements the next day reporting on our opening. Together with him was Tan Sri Datuk Ng Teck Fong.

In 1986/87, we have gone through a major consolidation due to severe ASEAN recession. This consolidation is vital and essentially instrumental to the next 20 years growth in business volume as well as business diversification. After a whole year into this process of consolidation, we presented this capable yet personal team of staffing, collection of well known brands then and a completely new shop front design.

By 1989, we have acquired authorized retailing of TAG Heuer, Longines, Rado, Seiko, and Dunhill.

In 1991, we acquired authorized retailing of Oris.

In 1995, we had been appointed the official retailer of all products of MontBlanc, ranging from writing instrument, small leather products, jewelry and timepieces. In the same year, we have expanded corporate sale with public sector like government agencies and service departments.

In 1997, we completely revamp our business strategies and renovated the entire shop in Pertama Shopping Complex.

In 2004, again, we further improved our brands collection and re-launched our corporate services to include banking and non-banking clients. In the same year, we created two major brands’ corner – ROLEX and TAG Heuer, and the whole shop was renovated again.

In order to further strengthen both market relations and business formations, we had undergone a major facelift renovation of our entire shop in Pertama Shopping Complex in October 2009, we acquired new authorized retailing of Mido, DOXA and Cerruti 1881. At the same time, we also had carried out inter-correlation formation of business partnership with selected brands to expand both the stock base and the horizon corporate sales. Yes! 51 years are a hard and challenging journey to manage a retailing business in this part of the world with heavy emphasis on personal quality of services, value of branding and knowledge of the products.

On these, we have to pay our salute to: The soul and captain of the company - Mr. Yew Chong Chan.

With a very limited in capital then, he only affords to buy three pen’s refills to start the business in 1959 and after he sold two refills, he replenished half a dozen, then two dozen, then a box of 100 pieces of refills.

Together with him, today our capable team is making up of Mr. Victor Lee (in red shirt), who joined the company in 1975, at the age of 17, and now his twin sons are 25 years old. He is our Senior Supervisor.

Mr. Chan Tai Chong (second from the right) is our Senior Technician. He joined the company in 1979 after years of watch technical experience from working in Singapore; and he is retiring in 2010.

Mr. Chong Yew Fatt (Fig 25 - Third from the right) joined the company in 1990 at the age of 21. He is our Sales Manager.

Mr. Jason Kew (Fig 25 - First Left) joined the company in 1995, after his graduation from University of Sydney, Australia with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Industrial Psychology and Business Communication. He is now our General Manager cum Corporate Business Manager of the company.

After 51 years, I believe we are still making history for our self and the industry. We believe integrity, honesty and sincerity are the major personal factors that led us through countless business' ‘storms’ and ‘winds’ and economics' 'quakes’ and ‘shapes'!

From that small beginning until today and many years to come, we are determined to show case the intelligence of craftsmanship together with their rich heritance of watch-making into this ever-growing discerning market of Malaysia. In doing so, we are guided by our motto, Reliable, Reasonable and Reputable in all level of our personal business dealings and services. We have shared this motto with these world famous brands for about 51 years now!
